REVIEWS

King Django is New York's original rude boy; the king of third wave ska revivalists. Recording as Skinnerbox since '90, he continually experimented with rocksteady, dancehall, dub reggae and even punk, compiling the Special Wild retrospective. Along the way, he gathered some of New York's most skillful players (along with Jamaican Roland Alphonso of '60s progenitors the Skatalites) and began making traditional ska as the Stubborn All Stars. Offering compelling evidence that there will be life after watered-down ska-influenced punk-pop commercialism, they genuinely preserve their roots-based foundation. Chanted sociopolitical messages, soulful rhythms, and bright Latinesque horns enlighten this stylistically authentic re-creation, eerily duplicating the dense analog studio ambiance of true '60s ska. Django's best songs deal with self-determination ("Pick Yourself Up" and "Tired Of Struggling") and salvation ("Glimmer Of Hope" and "Thankful"), but the offhandedly horn-saturated "Dave Helm" and the infectiously swinging "Because Of You" also hold up well. ---CDNOW

Since ska's recovery from its late-'80s, degenerative state, a glut of novice bands typically comprised of teenage thugs backed by the local junior high school marching band's horn section (with boots and Fred Perry shirts in lieu of their polyester uniforms) - have emerged. Thankfully, there are bands such as the Stubborn All-Stars offering legitimacy to today's scene. The All-Stars are not a group of kids blind-sided by a musical trend. Instead, they're a band that boasts an admirable amount of talent and sincerity - the line-up includes members of the Scofflaws, the Toasters and Skinnerbox NYC (Back With A New Batch also features guests like the Bosstones' front man Dicky Barrett, as well as Rancid's Tim Armstrong, Lars Frederiksen and Matt Freeman). Here we find the band laying down its usual solid roots ska, filled with a soulful clarity that has been lacking in ska's newer breeds. The vocals blend in a way that is extraordinarily smooth and refined, creating luxuriant textures, and the instruments are brought together with an enviable artistry, smartly arranged to compliment, rather than compete with, one another. Rather than dominating the songs, the horns are neatly reigned in, capably filling out the melody without overpowering the syncopated guitar rhythms that ultimately define ska. Skank away to the title track, "Crop No Drop" and "I Can't Touch You." ---CMJ
