Skinnerbox was formed by King Django at the very beginning of 1989. They played their first show as a 6-piece band in New York's Lower East Side on April 1st of that year. The line-up of that original 6-piece was King Django (vocals, trombone), Brandt Abner (vocals, keyboard), Dan Dulin (trumpet), Steven Carthy (bass), Stephen Abrams (guitar) and Vernon Lemon (drums). Django's original vision was to play traditional ska, rhythm & blues and reggae, but the band quickly took an experimental turn and incorporated many diverse elements including funk, rock, jazz, latin & dancehall. Their first recording sessions yielded the cassette self-release Instrumental Condtioning which sold faster than they could copy them. Some of the tracks from this release were re-mixed for the Special Wild CD. With the addition of El "Wood" Husey on saxophone, the band played tons of shows in New York City and nearby. Carthy and Lemon left the band in 1992. Jonathan McCain (Toasters) took over on drums, with Andrew Goodsight on bass, and the band began recording their first full-length, Tales of The Red. In the midst of recording, Malcolm Gold replaced Goodsight and overdubbed all the bass parts. Before the album was completed, Jason Jones replaced Abrams on guitar, and added some solos. Now out-of-print, selections from this record appear on Special Wild.
